Frequently
asked
questions

What do I need to know before taking my first Hot Yoga class?

Always listen to your body and take care of yourself. Don’t worry about keeping up with other students in class, everyone practices at their own level. Eat a light meal two hours before class and drink water up to 30 minutes before class.
If you feel dizzy or light-headed, either take child’s pose or lay down on your mat. If you feel you need to leave the room, we have a bench outside the room. Do not go downstairs without help from the instructor.

Do I need to be flexible to take yoga?

Absolutely not! Many people start a yoga practice because they notice they are losing flexibility and range of motion. In any yoga class, there is a spectrum of flexibility. Part of a yoga practice is acceptance and appreciation of your body while continuing to open and strengthen your body.

What are the Health Benefits of Yoga?

Because yoga connects mind, body, and breath, it’s different from a stretching class. In addition, yoga has been shown to decrease stress which improves sleep and lowers blood pressure. Research shows that yoga helps to improve mood and is therefore beneficial for people suffering from anxiety and depression.
Yoga improves strength, flexibility, and balance and helps in recovery from injuries.Yoga combined with meditation may help with weight loss. Yoga has been shown to be helpful in individuals undergoing cancer treatment, as well as individuals with chronic disease as it lowers stress, reduces inflammation, and improves immunity.

What do I wear and bring to a hot yoga class?

You should wear whatever you are comfortable wearing while being active in heated conditions. Most men wear shorts or swim trunks and a quick dry top or no shirt. Women may wear shorts or leggings and a top/bra that is comfortable in the heat. Rakta provides free mats and towels but most students prefer to bring and use their own. Bring a bottle of water and an open mind!

What are Rakta Hot Yoga's studio policies?

We respect our students’ time. Therefore, classes start and end on time. If an instructor goes late and you need to leave, try to leave before savasana.

The front door will be locked when the instructor goes upstairs to teach a class. This is to protect the personal belongings of our clients. Please do not ask the instructor to leave the door unlocked as it compromises the security of everyone’s belongings.

Please do not bring cell phones into the yoga room unless absolutely necessary.
Please practice hot yoga with a clean body free of  heavy perfumes. This benefits your body and respects those who may be sensitive to perfumes or scents.

Feel free to use our showers after class. Please be aware that others may be waiting to shower after you and be courteous of time.

Do you offer classes for children?

Rakta Hot Yoga’s heated classes are appropriate for teens ages 13+. The Fire hot series is appropriate for teens 16+ because of the 104 F heat. Our non heated classes including restorative yoga, barre, bands, wall yoga, and kickboxing are great conditioning classes for teens 13+. At this time, we do not offer classes for kids under 13 years old. Parents must sign a waiver prior to the first class.

What is the Yoga Wall?

The Yoga Wall originated in Iyengar Yoga lineage. It’s used to align the body in postures, inversions, and backbends. While some yoga walls have ropes, ours uses straps and a pelvic swing. We also use our wall for resistance training (using bands attached to the wall and handles on the straps for bodyweight exercises).

Wall classes are a fabulous way to vary your yoga practice. The wall provides support with a new inversion practice and can provide greater depth in a posture.

Our wall classes can only accommodate 12 people, so be sure to sign up. If you have any medical conditions such as inner ear issues, vertigo, motion sickness, glaucoma, pregnancy, high of low blood pressure, fainting, or recent spine surgery, please see your medical provider before taking a wall class.

How do I find a more quiet, meditative experience at Rakta Hot Yoga?

When it’s available, our wellness room is a great place to sit quietly before class. Our gentle yoga, restorative yoga, and wall yoga classes are great options for a more introspective experience.
